A cup of Filipino Salabat
A warm mix of ginger, lemon/lime and honey

Now that Winter is here, I find nothing better than sipping on a soothing cup of Salabat accompanied by a little Vocal & Singer Self-Care.

Salabat is a traditional Filipino ginger tea that’s long been used to soothe sore throats, warm the soul and in my own creative practice, prepare the voice for singing.

To me, it's more than just tea. It's a total ritual of restoration.

Here's how I make it - with a slight twist on sweetness (I like using coconut sugar, but honey or no sweetness is fine)

Ingredients for a pot-size serving of tea:

  • 1 thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger, sliced thin. If you feel like a stronger kick of heat, double it! Use fresh ginger. The dried stuff won't work!

  • 2 cups of water

  • A squeeze of fresh lemon and lime juice (optional) or, if available, calamansi

  • 1 tsp honey or coconut sugar

Method:

  1. Simmer ginger slices in water for 10–15 minutes.

  2. Strain and pour into a mug.

  3. Add lemon, lime, honey or coconut sugar, if desired.

  4. Sip slowly and savour the warmth.

Pair your tea with a self-care ritual:

Singing isn’t just about sound—it’s about being present, calm, and open. Here are a few ways to turn your Vocal Salabat moment into a mindful Singer Self-Care ritual:

  • Breathe: As the tea steams, close your eyes and take 5 deep belly breaths. Let tension melt.

  • Reflect: Jot down one sentence: “Today, I honour my voice by…” Then finish it honestly.

  • Listen: Play something that makes you feel connected and grounded. Whether it’s a healing ballad, a warm choral blend, or the simple sounds of nature.

  • Rest: Give yourself 5–10 minutes of stillness before jumping back into the day. Let your nervous system recalibrate.
