With our end-of-year performances just around the corner (it's this weekend!), it’s time to celebrate how live performance helps singers grow. Beyond the thrill of stepping in front of a mic and an audience, performing consolidates essential skills that are vital for any singer’s journey:
Vocal Technique: Applying techniques in a live setting reinforces and tests the stability of your technique.
Musicianship Skills: Timing, phrasing, and interpretation deepen as singers adapt to real-time feedback from their accompanists and audience.
Aural Skills: Live performance sharpens listening, from pitch accuracy to ensemble coordination.
Managing Nervous Energy: Facing nerves develops resilience, transforming performance anxiety into focus and energy.
If you're one of our performers this weekend, or if you're a singer looking to eventually work on your confidence for performance, here are some tips:
Prepare Thoroughly - but don't overdo it! Confidence begins with a balance of preparation and integration which happens when we rest from constant practice.
Use Your Breath: Efficient breathing isn’t just for singing; it’s your anchor when nerves strike. Take slow, deep breaths to calm your body and mind - but sometimes, a quick, active "Shhh, Shhh, Shhhhhhhh" sound can also help redirect that nervous energy.
Shift Your Perspective: View nerves as excitement! That adrenaline can fuel your energy and stage presence. Remember, the audience is on your side—they’re here to enjoy your music and to support your growth. Shift your focus from perfection to sharing your story and connecting with listeners.
Most importantly, remember that to be human means to get nervous when we sing in front of others - All of it is normal! All of it is welcome!
We are so proud of all of our students, and look forward to supporting those of our student community who have decided to get up and have a go this weekend!
